From 1740 - 1816
From 1740 - 1816
1-- RICHARD PARFREY was bur. 20 Oct 1795, at the church in Tottington, Norfolk. Burial stones for that church have been gathered and placed away from the church yard and the church closed to the public, to accommodate the military, who took over the township as a practice range in one of the wars, and decided to stay.
Richard mar. MARY BUSHELL on 25 Jan 1747, at St Peter & St Paul church, East Harling, Norfolk. Mary was bur. 4 Apr 1784 at St Ethelbert church in East Wretham, Norfolk.

It has been suggested, at "Holmes Family Tree" at Ancestry.com, that Richard and Mary had a later daughter named Anne (b. 1764), who went on to marry Thomas HOLSWORTH and lived in Salhouse, Norfolk. However, another researcher is of the opinion that the Holsworths may have come out of Horsham St Faiths in Norfolk. The marriage record shows Anne as surnamed PARFREE, but no parentage is given, and she was said to be 'of this parish' (Ringland, St Peter). It appears that Thomas and Anne had some 10 or 11 children.

2-- RICHARD PARFREY (Richard--1) was born abt 1753. He died 19 Nov 1803 and was bur. 22 Nov 1803 at St Nicholas church in Ashill, Norfolk. The exact date of Richard's birth is unknown, and some have suggested he was born about 1763. This would, however, make him just ten years old at the birth of his first child in 1773. It is possible, nevertheless, that he may have been baptized in 1763 (22 April), under the name PARFORTH, in the church in East Wretham, where his siblings were also baptized. Since his age is not given, he could have been 10 years old, and since his mother's name was not given, it could be another Richard as the parent - such as Richard Garforth, whose son George was baptized in 1772, mother's name Sarah. This awaits further documentation.

20a-- SUSAN PARFREY (Youngs--6; Richard--2; Richard--1) was baptized 5 Jan 1823 at Holy Trinity church in Marham, Norfolk. She moved into London, and was first married there. The couple then moved to Somerset, where Susan was a Victualler. Susan was a widow in the 1851 Census, living on Cumberland Row in Bath. We have not found another Census for Susan beyond 1851.
Susan married, first, GEORGE NORTH, and the marriage was registered Q2 1843 in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex (London). It is uncertain when his birth and death were, but we know he died sometime between 1843 and 1851. There are three registered Bath deaths for George North, one in 1844, one 1849 and one 1850.

Susan then married CHARLES CANTLE, the marriage registered Q1 of 1851 in Bath, with her name written as Susanna North. On their marriage form, his occupation was shown as a Traveller, and in the 1851 Census, where he shows up as a visitor in Susan's home, it was Brewer and Commercial Traveller. Earlier, when he had been married to his first wife, HELEN JANE SMITH, his occupation was Shoemaker and his father was also named Charles, who was a Carpenter. Helen's father was named John Smith and he was a Victualler. Helen must have died before 1851, when Charles was a Widower, 33 years old. One might wonder if Charles changed occupations based on having a father-in-law who was a Victualler. And one might also wonder how well he knew his wife, as the register entry that seems to mark her death names her Helen "Marienne" Cantle instead of Helen Jane. Coincidentally, the 2nd witness at his marriage to Helen was "Marianne Smith."
In any case, Charles married Susan[na] North, née Parfrey, and in the years 1851-52, he is listed in the directory as the main person at the "Heart & Compass" (Actually "Heart Encompassed Inn") on Cumberland Row in Bath, but Susan is not mentioned at all. At the baptism of a son in 1853, Charles was back to being a "Traveller." On the marriage form for Charles & Susan, his father is again Charles, who was a carpenter, indicating that this is the same Charles Cantle in both marriages, even if the occupations did not match.
