London, Kent, and Surrey Parfreys
When considering the Parfreys of the London area, it would be careless to name any one person as the Patriarch. It seems that all the families bearing this name, aside from a few disconnected names from the 16-1700s, arrived in London from other areas, such as Somerset, Gloucestershire, Norfolk, and Kent. As a result, the families herein shown are broken up into groupings, rather than being a part of a whole, as were those from neighboring counties.
The earliest record found so far, for the City of London is the marriage of Mary Watkins to Thomas Parfrey in 1654, and the subsequent burial of a daughter, Mary, 20 Nov. 1656, both at St. Michael Cornhill. In Middlesex County, which included parts of London outside the miracle mile, the earliest record so far found is that of the marriage of Eleanor Badder to John Parfrey, 16 Dec. 1790 at St. George Hanover Square. Even searching for similar sounding names, we only find one in Middlesex -- John Purfery, buried 31 Aug. 1643 at St. Margaret, Westminster; none appear in London City.
In the county of Kent, possible early surnames may include PARFER, PORFER (both from Northfleet), PROPHER (from Greenwich), and PORPHYRY (from Bromley). The first viable Kent surname found is that of Elizabeth Parfry, who was buried 8 Nov. 1738 at St. Peter and St. Paul church in Bromley. By the 1800s, there are several Parfrey variations in the registers, most of which will be shown in these pages.
As a matter of interest, the London Parfreys seem to claim the name in two distinct spellings, the second being PARFREE. A whole line with this name shows up in the records, but the patriarch of this line was actually married in Norwich, Norfolk. In early records for Norfolk, 'our' Parfreys also spelled their name Parfree; however, that appears to have been misspellings, as PARFREY consistently appears in later records, all in the same line.

Descendants of William Parfrey, Bricklayer out of Kent, England

1-- WILLIAM PARFREY was born about 1788 and was buried 24 Jul 1840, at age 52, at the church of St Nicholas in Deptford, Kent. His ancestry is unknown at this time. It appears that William married twice, although certainty cannot be yet established. Burial records for him and a 3-year-old child of the same name in 1840, both state that the abode was on Grove Lane. The child, at baptism was son of William and Eleanor Catherine, of Grove Lane. Pigots Directory of occupations for 1840 lists William Parfrey at 32 Grove lane, bricklayer. (William was born within the same time range as Robert Parfree, who was possibly born Ringland, Norfolk and married Esther Meen in Norwich. They could be related, but it's a long-shot.)
William married, first, SOPHIA CRAFTS on 30 May 1808, at St Margaret church in Lee Green, Lewisham, Kent. Sophia was born about the same time as William, and was buried 9 Sep 1832, age 44, at St Alfege church in Greenwich, Kent.
Children of William & Sophia:

William married, second, ELEANOR CATHERINE JESSON on 30 Dec 1833 in Lee, Kent. Eleanor, probably also called Catherine, was born about 1799, and she outlived William by about 32 years, her death being registered in the 3rd Quarter of 1872, in Greenwich, age 73. She was found in the 1841 and 1851 U.K. Censuses, as a widow and living with some of her birth family, as well as her daughter Rachel.

2-- FREDERICK JAMES PARFREY (William--1 by Sophia) was baptized on 9 Mar 1813, at St Alfege, Greenwich, Kent. He was 'a few days old,' according to the record. It may be Frederick's death registered in the 4th Quarter of 1865, in Greenwich. Support for this date lies in the marriage record for his daughter, which was witnessed not by Frederick, but by Eliza Ann Parfrey, the mother of the bride. Frederick, like his father, was a bricklayer.
Frederick married ELIZA ANN WHITFIELD on 30 Jan 1837, at St Nicholas church in Deptford, Kent. Eliza Ann's lineage is unknown.

* Two baptisms exist for Thomas Preston Parfrey; it is unknown if there are actually two children, or if the same child was baptized a second time (with his brother, Edward). The images are partially folded under, so birth dates are not readable.)
3-- MARY ANN PARFREY (William--1, by Sophia) was born 15 Aug and baptized 3 Sep 1817, at St Alfege church in Greenwich, Kent. Her death was registered Q2 1870, in St. Saviour Southwark, London/Surrey.
Mary Ann married SAMUEL TETHER, 25 Dec 1838, at St Nicholas church in Deptford, Kent, and they lived in Black Horse Square in Deptford. (Lackie's Topography of London describes it is being on Lower Road "the first on the L. beyond the 3 mile stone from London-bridge.") Samuel was born 27 Nov and baptized 16 Dec of 1810, at St Paul church in Deptford. He was the son of SAMUEL TETHER and ELIZABETH (her maiden name may have been HARRISON). It appears that the younger Samuel outlived his wife; he appears in the 1871 Census, at the St Olave Union Workhouse in Rotherhithe, Surrey. His death was registered Q2 1878, in St Olave Southwark.

4-- RACHEL PARFREY (William--1, by Eleanor Catherine) was born 24 Dec 1834, and baptized 9 Jan, following, at St Paul church in Deptford, Kent. She was buried 17 Jun 1855, age 20, at All Saints church in Rotherhithe, Surrey, but she had been living on Albert Street in Deptford. Also spelled Rachael. She probably died in childbirth.
Rachel married SAMUEL RUTHERFORD on 7 Mar 1852, at St James church in Bermondsey, Surrey. The marriage record says that Samuel's father was THOMAS RUTHERFORD, who had died. No occupation was given for his father, so it is difficult to name any one person. However, if Samuel was about the same age as Rachel, his birth might have been in early 1830s, so he may have been named Samuel George Rutherford, and the son of Thomas, Shipwright, and Eliza, of Mary Ann's Buildings, who was born 1 May and baptized 17 June of 1832 at St Paul church in Deptford. But, note that there are three Thomases from Deptford St Paul, so this speculation could be wrong.

5-- RICHARD WILLIAM PARFREY (Frederick James--2; William--1) was born 13 Aug, and baptized 1 Sep of 1845 at St Paul church in Deptford, Kent. His death was registered Q1 1903 in Greenwich, Kent (Greater London). Census reports we have found for a couple Richard and Harriet, give Richard's occupation first as Bricklayer, then painter and decorator. However, there are some confusing issues, as middle names are often reversed with, or used as first names.
Richard married HARRIET SELINA RUMMINGS on 9 Aug 1868, at St Mary church in Rotherhithe, Surrey, The marriage record states that Harriet was the daughter of ARTHUR WILLIAM RUMMINGS, a coachman. She was born about 1852, and her death was registered Q4 or 1883, in St George in the East, London. Because of the many ways her surname can be spelled (or misspelled), her background is as yet undetermined.

6-- EDWARD HENRY PARFREY (Frederick James--2; William--1 by Sophia) was baptized 6 Aug 1854 at St Paul church in Deptford, Kent, on the same day as his brother Thomas. Edward died 17 Aug 1903, and his death was registered in the 3rd Quarter of that year (a few months after his brother Richard, above). Various records give his occupation as Stoker or Marine Fireman; his probate says that he died at the Seaman's hospital in Greenwich.
Edward married CAROLINE LAWRENCE on 25 Dec 1878, at St Nicholas church in Deptford, Kent. Caroline was born about 1857, possibly in Woolwich, Kent. We failed to fit her into any family in a census report prior to her marriage; in the 1871 Census, when she was fourteen, she was a domestic servant under the Bianchi family in Greenwich. Her marriage record stated that she was the daughter of WILLIAM LAWRENCE, Blacksmith. The censuses for William take us from Tunbridge Wells, Kent (1871), to Hampstead, London (1881), and finally into Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire (1891), where it shows William as a Publican. All of these censuses show his wife to be MARTHA, and show no daughter named Caroline. We can find no census yet for William in 1861, when Caroline would have been four. Some Family Trees on Ancestry.com show Martha's name as HOMEWOOD, in which case their marriage would have been registered in Tunbridge Q3 1852.

7-- HENRY PERCY PARFREY (Richard William--5; Frederick James--2; William--1 by Sophia) was born abt 1875 and his birth registered in Lewisham, Kent, in the 4th Qtr of that year. It is unknown when Henry died. There is record in Australia of a Henry Percival Parfrey, but the BMDs show no Henry P. Parfrey in any English county.
Henry married ROSE EMMA SKERRY COOKNILL on 27 Dec 1897, in Stoke, Warwickshire, England. Rose was the daughter of JOHN HENRY SKERRY, alias COOKNILL, and ELIZA PARKER, and was baptized 2 Jul 1876 in the Parish of Stoke. John Henry was baptized SKERRY, his mother's surname, because he was born before she married WILLIAM COOKNILL. However, he used both names in various records. Rose Emma was also baptized under the surname SKERRY, presumably because that was her father's legal name. (William Cooknill married Rosanna Skerry in 1841)
The date of Henry's death hasn't yet been ascertained, but it appears that Rose Emma went on to marry JAMES BOWYER in 1909, and in 1911, she was in his household with one son by James, and three children by Henry Parfrey.

"PARFREE" Family from Norfolk to London
Descendants of Robert Parfree
1-- ROBERT PARFREE was probably born in Norfolk, England, possibly the son of ROBERT PARFREE and SARAH, his wife. He was born about 1779, and may have been baptized at St Peters church in Ringland, Norfolk, 2nd March of that year. (The Register image is very faded, and the family name may have been spelled "Parfrey" in this record; the year may have been 1774.) -- An earlier Robert Parfree, "married man," son of Thomas Parfree and Elizabeth (late Elizabeth O'___, spinster), aged 49, was buried 13 Nov 1786 (est. birth 1737)
There is no way to prove at this time that this Robert is the same as the man showing up in London records. It is purely circumstantial that his wife is named the same, and that his children were no longer born in Norfolk, but in London. It seems possible, however, that after loosing three children at a very young age, the couple may have wanted to begin again elsewhere. Researchers should know, however, that there is another Robert Parfree, aged 59, who was buried in Salhouse, Norfolk, in the same district as Ringland, where we suppose Robert was born.
Robert married ESTHER MEEN 14 Jan 1800, at St Saviour church in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Her birth date and place are unknown, but she may have died at age 54, and been buried 10 May 1832, under the name Hester Parfree (Esther and Hester are often interchangeable). If this is the same person, it is possible that Robert re-married, to a woman named Sarah, and had two more children baptized in 1835, also in Shoreditch. (An alternative is as below, that his son Robert married Sarah.)
Possible children of Robert & Esther:

v. --------- MARGARET MARTHA PARFREE b. 5 Feb; bp. 5 Mar 1815, St Leonard, Shoreditch, MDX; d. __
It is supposed that this Robert was the son of another Robert Parfree, whose surname could have been Palfry. Piecing together various Norfolk records, but by no means with certainty, we may speculate that the elder Robert Parfree was born about 1737, calculating from his age of 49 at the time of his burial 13 Nov 1786, at St Peter, Ringland, Norfolk. We are not certain that the burial record is his. It names him as 'wife of' Thomas Parfree and Elizabeth Wotchem, his relationship an obvious error. This leads to baptisms: ROBERT, s/o Tho & Elizabeth PALFRY, bp. 20 Mar 1736/37, St Mary, Kenninghall, Norfolk. Then we find Banns for ROBERT PALFREY of 'Shottisham' All Saints and SARAH AMYAL (Amyas, Amyss?) on the 4th, 11th and 18th of October 1761, followed by their marriage on 27 Oct 1751 at All Saints. Sarah may have been the daughter of John and Ann AMOSS or AMYAS or EAMES of Shotesham. (She may have been one of six children born to them) It may have been her burial record from Salhouse St Faiths, naming 'Sarah Parfree, a Widow (late of Ringland) was buried 9 Sep 1810, aged 72 years. However, there is a discrepancy of years between the supposed birth year of 1739 entered in the baptism record (in 1742), and the calculated year of birth at the burial in 1810 (1731). So, in spite of possibilities, the true identities of this couple remain shrouded.
