Abbott Family of Norfolk
1 -- WILLIAM ABBOTT died before 1827, the year his daughter married, as a minor, with permission of her mother Susan, who was a widow. William lived in Norfolk, England, possibly in East Wretham. He may have had a brother named John, who married in February of 1793, Sarah Doe, but who was shot by accident and buried 30 Apr that same year. Sarah was later to give birth to a son, who was baptized John Abbott on 6 Oct 1793 in East Wretham. William was a Land Steward and Farmer at the time of his daughter Elizabeth's baptism in 1813 and may have served as a witness to the marriage of Samuel Chilvers and Mary Cook, 18 Nov 1818.
William married SUSANNA CLEMENTS 5 Dec 1791 at St Ethelbert church in East Wretham, Norfolk. Records show four Susannas born to John and Susanna Clements between 1767 and 1773 in Shipdham, Norfolk. This Susanna may have been the last, the one who survived. If so, she was baptized 19 Aug 1773. Susan was still living in 1827, when her daughter Mary was married.

2 -- WILLIAM ABBOTT (William--1) was baptized 13 Dec 1795 at St Ethelbert church, East Wretham, Norfolk. William may have been a witness at his sister Mary's marriage in 1827. He was a Game Keeper when his daughters were baptized, and a Shop Keeper at the baptism of his son. It appears that William was bur. 27 Mar 1833 in the St Ethelbert Churchyard in Wretham.
William married MARY FAUX 11 Aug 1824 at St Ethelbert church in East Wretham. Mary's sister, Elizabeth, may have married Robert Chilvers in 1830, the union witnessed by William and Caroline Abbott. Mary was living at the time of the 1841 Census, for East Wretham, Norfolk, and was living with her son William, along with Phoebe Faux and Mary Chilvers. She was a shopkeeper.

3 -- EDWARD ABBOTT (William--1) was baptized 12 Nov 1797 at St Ethelbert church, East Wretham, Norfolk. His death was registered Q1 1874 in Epping, Essex, England. According to his grandson, Edward was a second son who did not wish to settle for second best, so he headed out on his own, becoming an agent for Sir Richard Sutton, notorious for his wanton killing of game, and later accompanied Lord Ashburton to America for several years, as his Secretary.
Edward married JANE JACOB 17 Mar 1826, at St Ethelbert church, East Wretham. Her parentage is not proven but she appears to be the daughter of JAMES JACOB and JANE BRADFIELD, and probably was born 19 Nov and baptized 29 Nov 1795, at All Saints & St Mary church in Weeting, Norfolk. There is another Jane, daughter of a James & Jane, who was baptized 5 Feb 1797, at All Saints church in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. However, the name Bradfield appears several times in the next generations, so we are opting for the first.

Jonathan was a Farmer of 174 acres, employing several laborers, as shown in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. He was retired by the time of the 1871 census.
Jonathan married CHARLOTTE GAYFORD, and the marriage was registered Q3 1841 in Thetford, Norfolk. Charlotte was the daughter of SAMUEL GAYFORD and his wife CATHERINE, and was born about 1811 in Hockham, Norfolk.

Mary married JOHN HALLS BARE on 25 Dec 1827, at St Ethelbert church in East Wretham. An Ancestry.com family tree says that his parents were WILLIAM BARE and ELIZABETH HALLS, who were married in 1799. John was a Schoolmaster, and he was credited with founding a boys' school in St John's Street, Essex. After Mary's death, John remarried, to Maria Manning in Q4 of 1848 in Colchester, Essex.

Generation 3
======================================================================================
6 -- JAMES BRADFIELD ABBOTT (Edward--3; William--1) was born 13 February and baptized 31 May 1829 in East Wretham, Norfolk. He apprently died on his birthday, 13 Feb 1913 in Denton, Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA. James had been a Farmer of some 1350 acres, employing 30 people, as shown in the 1861 Census for Cranwich, Norfolk, England, but by the 1871 Census he was out of business. His son later wrote that James' father, Edward, had convinced him to emigrate to America, and he settled in Nebraska, where by the 1880 US Census for Denton, he was once more a Farmer. A son named after James was listed in the 1861 Census for Cranwich, Norfolk, age 6 (est. b. 1855); that same son appears to be staying with a relative of Anne, his mother, in Sapiston, Suffolk in 1871, along with his brother, Frank. However, in the 1880 Census, in Denton, Nebraska, there is a son named James B. Abbott who is just one year old. Generally, a second or third child with the same name is to replace one who is deceased. A James Bradfield Abbott is associated with the year 1874, but no indication whether that is a birth or death year is made. This could be a second child named James B., or it could be the death of the first James B. Another James Bradfield was born in 1879, and he was labeled James B Jr in the 1910 Census.
James married ANNE GATES on 20 Sep 1853, at St Andrews church in Illington, Norfolk, England. According to entries at FreeREG online, Anne was the daughter of FRANCIS HAMMOND GATES and CHARLOTTE MURRELL, and was baptized 11 May 1834, at St Andrew church. The Denton (Nebraska) Community Historical Society says that Anne W. Gates was born 6 May 1835. We don't know if the Anne they name is James' wife. Six-year-old 'Ann' was found in the 1841 England census in the home of Francis' brother, John, but in 1851, 16-year-old 'Anne' was in her parents' household.

Robert married ISABELLA RAVEN, the marriage registered Q1 1860 in St Giles, London, England. Isabella was the daughter of JOHN RAVEN, rector of the Mundford church in Norfolk, England, and his wife ELIZABETH GRANT. Isabella was baptized 27 Mar 1835 at the church in Mundford. Her death was registered Q3 1883 in Wandsworth, London.

The Family of Isabella Raven
RICHARD RAVEN, c1725-1803 [Kings Lynn forums]
---- RICHARD RAVEN & MARY KING [Kings Lynn forums] -- (m. 4 Oct 1781) |
JOHN RAVEN was probably baptized 23 Aug 1798, at St Margaret with St Nicholas church in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. The baptism record shows his parents to be RICHARD RAVEN & MARY, whose surname may have been KING. A research query says that John was awarded a scholarship by the town in which he lived, to attend Emmanuel College at Cambridge, which was the first step in his becoming a clergyman. John Raven was buried 6 Dec 1880, in Mundford. The above query stated that Richard, John's father, was a painter, and the son of RICHARD RAVEN, Sr, also a painter, who lived from about 1725 to 1803. It was said that Richard Senior purchased a home in Lynn, in which George Vancouver was born.
John married first, ELIZABETH GRANT of Lynn, on 16 Jun 1826 in Methwold, Norfolk. Elizabeth was probably the daughter of JOHN GRANT, who came to Norfolk from St Luke, Middlesex, and ELIZABETH AYRE, of South Lynn. She was born about 1800, and buried 4 Sep 1844 in Mundford. Her mother's surname was carried down to two of the Raven children. At the time of their marriage, John Raven was Curate in Methwold, being the officiating minister on other marriages on the same register page as his own. Children of John & Elizabeth: |
i. -------- ARTHUR - b. 30 Jul & bp. 14 Aug 1827, St George, Methwold, NFK; d. __ |
John married, second, MARY ANN AYRE, the marriage being registered Q1 of 1846 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Mary Ann was the daughter of JAMES AYRE and ANN, as shown on her baptism record for 24 Nov 1803, at St Margaret church in Kings Lynn. She was buried 17 Nov 1880, just 19 days before her husband. Their names fall sequentially in the burial register.

8 -- LEONARD JOHN ABBOTT (Jonathan--4; William--1) was born 16 Oct and baptized 17 Nov 1844, at All Saints church in Shipdham, Norfolk, England. His death may have been registered Q1 1884 in Mitford, or Q4 1929 in Wayland. His occupations, following three censuses, included Banker Clerk, Soda Water Manufacturing, and Auctioneer's Valuer.
Leonard married CAROLINE LYDIA KERSLAKE on 6 Jul 1869 at St Nicholas church in East Dereham, Norfolk. Her name in the Civil Registration is spelled Caroline Lidid Kerslake. It is probable that Lydia's father was THOMAS KERSLAKE, High Bailiff of County Court and Auctioneer. The marriage of Leonard and Lydia was witnessed by Thomas Kerslake and Sarah Jane Kerslake. (Note: a Thomas Kerslake Baker of St Olave Hart Street in London, was married to Frances Belinda Griffin of Mundford, Norfolk, on 19 Apr 1827, in Mundford, NFK)
Children of Leonard and Lydia:

9 -- FRANK EDWARD ABBOTT (James B--6; Edward--3; William--1) was born 29 Jan 1856 in Cranwich, Norfolk, England. His birth was registered in Thetford, Norfolk. He died 2 Nov 1934, possibly in Omaha, Nebraska, where he had been employed as a watchman at a packing plant in the 1930 census. He is buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska.
Frank married HENRIETTA J ROSKROW, in about 1884. Henrietta was born in Sep 1865, in Vermont or Massachusetts, the dau of JOHN ROSKROW of England and ELLEN PARKS, of Canada. She died 22 Aug 1949 and is also buried at Wyuka in Lincoln. The 1910 Census says she was the mother of 6 children, 5 of whom were living.

Harry married CLARA A. FUSHIA on 26 Apr 1881, possibly at St Mary's Catholic church in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. She may have been the daughter of Battice, or Jean Battista Fushia, who was French Canadian. Clara was born 6 Nov 1857 and died 27 Jul 1923. She is also buried at Yankee Hill Cemetery.

11 -- EDWARD CHARLES ABBOTT (James B--6; Edward--3; William--1) was born 17 Dec 1860 in Cranwich, Norfolk, England and died 7 Apr 1939 in Giltedge, Fergus County, Montana, USA. He was known as "Teddy Blue" and worked on cattle drives between Texas and Nebraska. He eventually settled in Montana, married and raised a family. He is buried at Fort Maginnis Cemetery in Giltedge, Montana. A colorful account of his life's experiences can be found in his co-authored book, "We Pointed Them North: Recollections of a Cowpuncher."
Edward married MARY STUART on 29 Sep 1889 in Alpine, Carbon, Montana. Mary was the daughter of GRANVILLE STUART and a native woman AWBONNIE TOOTANKA, or perhaps AUBONY STOOKARAKA. Mary was born 2 Feb 1870 in Deer Lodge, Montana and died 5 Feb 1967 in Lewiston, Powell, Montana. She is also buried at Fort Maginnis Cemetery in Giltedge.

12 -- WILLIAM JOHN ABBOTT (James B--6; Edward--3; William--1) was born 9 Apr 1871 in Cranwich, Norfolk, England, and died 26 Oct 1943 in Berkeley, Alameda, California, USA. His name was often given as John William or John, and he was sometimes called "Jack." The 1900 US Census for Denton in Lancaster County, Nebraska says he was a Rail Laborer. We think the 1920 Census, for Aurora, Nebraska shows William, then a Widower, as Manager of Stockyard (Railroad)
Jack married ANNA LAURA MAHAN, on 1 Jan 1895, at Holy Trinity Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Anna was born 26 March 1876 in Knox County, Ohio, and was daughter of Loren Ellis Mahan and Almeda I. Harris. (Misc marriage records show an Anna [Mahon] Abbott, "widow" was married to Thomas Robblee on 7 Mar 1906 or 1907, in Iowa. William John Abbott was still very much alive, and they were both found together in the 1910 Census, for Lincoln, Nebraska.)

Charlotte first married CHARLES LEMAY, a man of French extraction out of Missouri, USA. Charles was murdered in September of 1897 near Lake Poinsett, Hamlin, South Dakota, where he had gone for work. He was carrying his pay when his companion ambushed and robbed him, leaving Charles dead on the trail back to Nebraska. At his death, Charlotte was carrying their second child.

ii. -------- MYRTLE M. LEMAY b. Nov 1897, Nebraska; d. __ m. CHARLES F. MILLER (1 child)
Charlotte married secondly, FREDERICK J. GILES on 19 Apr 1900 in Lancaster County, Nebraska. Frederick was the son of JAMES GILES and HARRIET CLARIDGE from London, England, where Frederick was also born in Feb of 1864. He died 31 May 1918 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two references give different places of burial, Sunnyside Cemetery or Denton Cemetery. His birth is also in question as Find A Grave gives his birth as 5 Mar 1863, which may be the entry in the England Civil Registration Index for March 1863 in St Giles, Middlesex, England (London area). Only a birth certificate with parents' names can confirm the precise date.

Unrelated to the Abbott family or to us, yet connected in an unusual way, is a fellow Englishman named John P. Elmsley. John apparently came to America at the same time as the Abbotts, although it is unknown if they had prior arrangements, or if they met by chance while traveling. The fact remains that in subsequent United States Censuses, John was a part of the Abbott household.
JOHN PETER ELMSLEY was born in Buckinghamshire, England and his birth was registered Q3 1838 in Eton. His baptism, surprisingly, took place 8 Jun 1838 at St Margaret church in Uxbridge, Hillingdon, London. The Register says he was the son of Alexander and Mary Anne, of Iver Heath (Buckinghamshire), and his father was a 'farmer.' John probably did not marry. A biographical note by Denton Community Historical Society, for J. R. C. Miller, says "James B. Abbott wife and family and Cap Emsley and Peter Brandenberger were in section 1-9-5". City Directories for Lancaster County, Nebraska use the name Capt. J. P. Elmsley. The following Censuses seem to follow John's family.
