Other Parfrey Family Lines in Somerset
A-- JAMES PARFREY was born between 1773 and 1780, possibly in Bridgwater, Somerset. The Censuses for 1841 and 1851 give his occupation as Coach Maker. One researcher gives the date 15 Mar 1862 as James' date of death, aged 82. His parentage is not yet discerned. There are varying opinions. One researcher names Richard Parfrey and Joan Shopland as his parents, but the Richard Parfrey named is from the Thomas Parfrey line, shown in Part 1 of the Somerset Parfreys, whose lifeline ran from 1801 to 1879. A marriage of a compatible year took place 24 Sep 1776, at St John church in Glastonbury, Somerset, between JAMES PARFREY and MARY MANCHIPE. Glastonbury is some 10-12 miles from Bridgwater. Perhaps these are James' parents.
A contemporary of James, also in Bridgwater, was JOSEPH PARFREY, a Sawyer who mar. ELIZABETH, with three children shown in the baptisms -- Elizabeth (1 Apr 1826), Henrietta (14 Feb 1830), and Levi (22 Apr 1832). Another contemporary was a single woman named Charlotte Parfrey, who had a son William, baptized 6 Aug 1826, at St Mary in Bridgwater.
James married SARAH BIBB, on 28 May 1809 at St Mary church in Bridgwater, Somerset. The marriage was witnessed by Fanny Gold and John MANCHIPE (see spec marriage of an elder James and Mary, above). Sarah may have been the daughter of WILLIAM BIBB and SUSANNAH HARRIS, and if so, was baptized 8 Nov 1786 at St Mary church in Bridgwater. William and Sarah had been married 3 June 1782 at St Mary church, and before having Sarah, they baptized a son named William on 10 Nov 1784.
Children of James & Sarah:

B-- JAMES PARFREY (James--A) was born 11 Jan 1810 and baptized 23 Aug 1812 at St Mary, Bridgwater, Somerset. He was buried at St Peter & St Paul church in Mitcham, Surrey, 7 Aug 1863. James, like his father, was a Coach Maker, and in his Death Certificate he was said to be a Journeyman Coach Painter. James suffered from Bright's Disease.
James married ELIZABETH PINNIGER, 17 Nov 1834 at St James church in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. The Census reports named James' wife Elizabeth, and in 1871, she was Mother-in-Law to her daughter's husband Joseph Lovell. Additionally, a Brother-in-Law, William Pinniger is shown in the same household. Elizabeth was born in Rotherhithe, Surrey and lived with James, although, in 1861 she seems to have been married, but living as a Lodger in Streatham, Surrey, and was a 'Monthly nurse.' By 1871, her husband had died, and she lived with her daughter and continued to do so in 1881. She probably died shortly thereafter.

D-- JOHN PARFREY (James--A) was baptized 17 June 1820 at St Mary church in Bridgwater, Somerset. In 1841, John was in county Glamorgan in Wales, on Mariner's Row, his occupation being Coach maker (not surprisingly). It may have been his death that was registered Q3 or 1889, at age 71, in Swansea, Glamorgan.
John married ELIZABETH OWEN and the marriage was registered Q4 of 1843 in Swansea. Elizabeth was probably born there, around 1818, but this name appears everywhere and there is no way of sorting it out, without her parents' names.

E-- FREDERICK PARFREY (James--A) was born abt 1833 in Bridgwater, Somerset. He is shown with his parents in 1841 and 1851 in Gloucestershire, then with his wife, Keziah, in 1861. It is believed that he then moved his growing family to Cork, Ireland, where the majority of his children were born. In 1901, Frederick and his family are found in the Hibernica Buildings, Urban Cork, but for some reason, his wife and daughter are both named "Peggy." Frederick's name is found online frequently in various trees and charts, and with him are named some ten to fourteen children, although we have so far found records for only nine. Not enough of the references actually are 'real' birth records, but simply speculative names from ambiguous sources given a source title in FamilySearch "Ireland Births and Christenings" and Ancestry ("Select births") to make them look official. It would have been helpful to see Ireland censuses for 1871, 1881, 1891, but due to shortsightedness, paper shortages and war, all have been destroyed or shredded. Frederick died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census. Cork has a death registration for a Frederick Parfrey in 1909, with the estimated birth year as 1845.
Frederick married KEZIAH HARPER 22 Dec 1857 at St Mary church in Yate, Gloucestershire. Keziah, daughter of JAMES HARPER and GRACE SHIPP, had been born in Yate in 1839 and was baptized at St Mary church there on 7 July of that year. She died sometime after 1911, the year in which she was shown in the Ireland Census for Cork, a widow, aged 72, living with two sons, Fred, age 36 and Joseph, age 23. A registration for the death of "Kezzia Parfrey" b. abt 1842, was filed in Cork, in Q2 1913, and Probate documents naming beneficiary William Parfrey give a death date of 10 Apr 1913.

F-- JANE SARAH PARFREY (James--B; James--A) was born in 1841, the birth being registered in the 3rd Quarter of that year in Croydon, Surrey, England. An Ancestry family tree says she died 25 Jan 1932, in Wallington, Surrey.
Jane married JOSEPH LEVELL, and the marriage was registered Q3 1865 in Lambeth, Surrey. Joseph was born abt 1843 in Egham, Surrey. His occupation in 1871 was Carpenter; in 1881, he was a Florist's Manager.

G-- JAMES PARFREY (John--D; James--A) was born abt 1853 and baptized 20 Mar 1853 at St Andrew church in Clifton, Gloucestershire. His death was registered Q3 1928 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. Although his mother was from Wales, his family first lived in Gloucestershire, where they are found in the 1861 and 1871 U.K. Censuses. James lived with his parents in 1881, in Swansea, and in 1891 was head of his own family on Oxford Street in Swansea. It appears that James and Jane Ann spent some time in Somerset, where they were listed in the 1901 U.K. Census for Wembdon. Their last son was born nearby in Bridgwater. In 1911, they were back in Swansea. Swansea City Directories, under Cycle Manufacturers, gives the names Jas Parfrey, 43 Oxford St, and E. M. Parfrey & Co, 17 Oxford St in Swansea.
James married JANE ANN WILLIAMS and the marriage was registered Q3 1877 in Swansea, Glamorgan. Jane Ann was born about 1860 in Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales, and it is probably her death that was registered Q2 1926 in Swansea.

H-- WILLIAM PARFREY (John--D; James--A) was born abt Nov. 1855 and baptized 12 Oct 1856 at St John the Baptist church in Chilcompton, Somerset, England. William was found with his parents in 1861 in Gloucestershire, then in 1871 in Swansea. By 1891 he was married in Swansea, with family, and in 1900, he was found in Manhattan, New York, having emigrated in 1895. The Passenger Lists to New York seem to indicate that he removed first, in June of 1895 on SS Ohio, and his family followed in Dec on SS Etruria, not an easy trip for his wife, who had with her six children, the youngest being just 2 months old. Although the 1920 Census for William shows him to be well settled in USA, he apparently went back to Wales with his wife sometime between 1920 and 1930. It is likely his death that was registered Q2 1933 in Swansea.
William married ELIZABETH MARY BULL, and the marriage was registered Q3 1881 in Swansea, Glamorgan. Elizabeth was born abt Mar 1857 in London, England. It is possible, though not certain, that Elizabeth suffered mental problems and resided for some time at the Manhattan State Hospital, where in 1910, the census reported inmates as "insane." She may have still been hospitalized during the 1920 Census, when William and Albert and Alice are shown in Manhattan (Alice, married to Charles Stenerwalt). Elizabeth's death was registered Q1 1930, at Bridgend, Glamorganshire.

I-- WILLIAM HENRY PARFREY (?Frederick--E; James--A) was born between 1869 and 1871 in Cork, Ireland. A family tree on Ancestry.com says he was born in 1851, but that would have been long before his parents were married. The Ireland censuses for 1901 and 1911, seem to fit our William more reasonably. His death is unknown as yet, although a Probate record was found for one William Henry Parfrey, for 2 Dec 1960, with the widow's name, Eileen Parfrey. The hang is that the censuses for 1901 and 1911 both show a wife named Mary Ann. He could have married Eileen later in life.
William married MARY ANN CROSS and the marriage was registered Q2 1891 in Cork, Ireland. We do not know Mary Ann's parentage, although the 1901 Ireland Census gives her mother's name as MARGARET, who was born in England. Mary Ann's birthplace was said to be County Cork, while in 1911, it says Bandon.

J-- WALTER PARFREY (?Frederick--E; James--A) was said to have been born around 1865 in Cork, Ireland. Our correspondent and fellow researcher, C.P., says Walter was the son of Frederick and Keziah. Because Walter's birth was 1865, it may be that he is the Frederick James Walter Parfrey shown as a son of Frederick and Keziah, which would mean that our speculation over a supposed death in 1866 would not be correct (or that we have listed the wrong child).
Walter is said to have married JANE O'CONNOR. A 1907 marriage for a Walter Parfrey, includes the possible spouse name of Mary Anne O'Connor, but specific couples are not noted.
Children of Walter & his wife: (according to C.P.)

K-- GILBERT STANLEY PARFREY (James--G; John--D; James--A) was born in 1896 and the birth registered in the third Quarter of that year in Bridgwater, Somerset. His death was registered Q1 1967 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. Gilbert was with his parents in the 1901 U.K. Census for Wembdon, Somerset and the 1911 U.K. Census for Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. He was adventurous enough to travel, in 1927, to America, and was found, with his wife and child in the 1930 U.S. Census, for Newark, Essex, New Jersey. He worked as a chauffeur at an auto renting company and was listed in the Newark City Directory as mechanic that same year. He must have found his adventure less than satisfying, as his death was registered back in Wales.
Gilbert married MARIE A. FABBENI and the marriage was registered Q4 1920 in Swansea, Glamorgan. Marie was born abt 1897 in England. According to the 1930 U.S. Census, her father was from Italy and her mother from England, and Marie emigrated 1929. Marie's middle name may have been Agnes, as the U.K. Incoming Passenger Lists for 29 Jan 1933, shows an Agnes Parfrey, aged 34 heading for Wales, accompanied by a child, Joan, aged 11. If this is the same person, Marie may have been registered at birth as Mary Agnes Fabbeni, Q3 1898, in Chester, Cheshire, England.
Child of Gilbert & Marie:

L-- CHARLES JOHN PARFREY (William--H; John--D; James--A) was born 27 Nov 1888 and baptized 27 Mar 1889 at St Mary church in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. He died in Sep of 1966, in Suffolk County, New York. Charles arrived Port of New York 30 Nov. 1895, was a declarant for citizenship for the WWI Draft Registration in 1917, and was naturalized by the time of the 1920 U.S. Census.
Charles married ELIZABETH VOREL 6 Mar 1912 in Manhattan, New York. Elizabeth was 3 or 4 years younger than Charles, and was born in New York, although the censuses show her parents born elsewhere --- in 1920, Austria and in 1930, Czechoslovakia. She had a brother named George, who was with them for the 1940 Census, in Queens, NY.
Children of Charles & Elizabeth:
i. --------- CHARLES PARFREY b. 17 Jan 1913, NY; d. Jan 1977, Florida
ii. -------- EDMUND PARFREY b. 16 Mar 1914, NY; d. Jul 1978, Florida
M-- ALBERT FREDERICK PARFREY (William--H; John--D; James--A) was born 17 Sep 1890 in Wales, and was baptized 18 Oct 1893 at St Mary church in Swansea, Glamorgan. New York Passenger Lists say he arrived from Liverpool, England 9 Dec 1895. At the time of the WWI Draft Registration in 1917 he was a declarant for citizenship; and by 1930, in the U.S. Census, he was naturalized.
Albert married first, MARIE N. FISCHER on 11 Jun 1913 in Manhattan, New York, New York. The New York City Death Index shows a Mary Parfrey, who died 11 Apr 1915 in Manhattan, aged 20. This may be Marie, with her Americanized name. Albert was a widower in the 1920 Census.
Child of Albert & Marie:
i. --------- ALBERT PARFREY b. abt 1915, Manhattan, NY; d. __
Albert then married ELSIE WALTERS on 17 Apr 1920 in Manhattan, New York. Elsie was born about 1898 in New York. Her parents were probably foreign born, her father from Germany and her mother from Czechoslovakia.
N-- SYDNEY PARFREY (William--H; John--D; James--A) was born 5 Aug 1893 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales and died 19 Sep 1941 in the Bronx, New York. In the 1915 New York State Census, Sydney and his brothers Albert and George were living together in New York City. Sydney was one of 6 children arriving in United States 9 Dec 1895, with their mother, having departed from Liverpool.
Sydney married HAZEL JAMES on 12 July 1919 in Manhattan, New York, New York. Hazel was born about 1901, but her birthplace is unknown. In the 1920 U.S. Census, in which she is found with Sydney, it is said that she was born in Kentucky, U.S., her father was born in Spain, and her mother born in Wales. Whether she may have died between 1920 and 1930, we don't know, but in 1930, Sydney is with his sons only, and the birthplace of the parents of the children is said to be Wales and Wales, for both father and mother.

PARFFREY
Families in Devon and Somerset
Another line was first noticed under the name JOHN PARFFREY, of Devon, while researching the Somerset Parfreys shown above, and was set apart from the others for reasons unknown. The name spelled this way seems to be unique to Crediton, Devon, and Axbridge, Somerset, although not all references to that family are consistent. It was the most often used, even in records of births, marriages and deaths, and was carried this way into America. It is possible, though unproven, that John was the son of Samuel Parffrey, who may have been a son of William and Hester Parfrey, whose story follows.
1-- WILLIAM PARFREY was born in Devon, England, around 1780. He married HESTER, or Esther and they had several children:

In 1820, the records show that William Parfrey and his wife, Hester, and their five children were all sent to 'hard labor' in Dorchester Prison in Dorset, England. The charge - Vagrancy. Dictionary: "a person without a settled home or regular work who wanders from place to place and lives by begging."
7 June 1820
On 5 Oct 1829, William 'Palfrey,' 59, and Samuel 'Palfrey,' 19, were again detained at the Dorchester Prison, this time for "Stealing money." They were released 16 Mar 1830, after serving time six months, for a crime of which they were acquitted.
It may be that the Somerset and Gloucestershire Parfreys bear no connection to this Parfrey family, but their name certainly fits among the families we are obliged to include on these pages, and their sad but fascinating circumstances bring life to the many faceless names we encounter.

2-- SAMUEL PARFREY was born abt 1806 in Sandford, Devon. He was a sawyer and married MARY (poss. MARY PARTRIDGE from Morchard Bishop, Devon, on 25 Sep 1827 in Sandford, according to ambiguous records labeled as "Select" at Ancestry.com). Samuel's death is unknown. There is a Samuel who died in 1862, with registration in Crediton, Devon Q2 of that year (under Samuel Parffrey), but this could easily be the infant Samuel, whose birth was registered the same quarter in the same location (parents unknown). Still, records for Samuel of 1806 seem to end with the 1961 Census, so he probably died soon after that. In 1851 his family was listed under the name "Palfrey," and indexed at Ancestry as "Pulfrey," which is their misspelling of Parfrey, but we're not going there.

This Samuel of 1806 may have been the subject of a brief 'biography' written by the Devon Heritage Centre of the South West Heritage Trust, which we read by way of the U.K. National Archives.
Samuel Parfrey, labourer:
1828. Was born in Sandford, his father's settlement, was never an apprentice but when he was about 12 or 13 his father put him with Mr William Bragg of Washford Pyne for no wages, stayed about 3 years, then went home to his father in Sandford and went out as a day labourer, he then went to Mr James Frost of Morchard Bishop by the week for about 6 months, he then went to Mr Simon Phillips in East Worlington by the week for 1 year 10 months, returned to Sandford and worked at different places by the week.
3-- JOHN PARFREY / PARFFREY was born abt 1838 in Crediton, Devon. His birth may have been registered at Crediton in the 3rd Quarter of 1838 (with just one 'f' in his surname), and his death registered Q2 1903, age 64, at Axbridge, Somerset (with 'ff'). It is not known why the name suddenly had double 'f's. At first it seemed like just a misspelling of "Parfrey," but the two 'ff's are used in future records, almost exclusively, so it appears it is a deliberate variation. There are Parffreys in Devon today.
Note that there is a JOHN PARFFREY noted in the "Law Times" of 1872, who was "out of business" in Weston-super-Mare. It is not known at this time if this John is connected.
John married (1), ELIZABETH BLACKMORE, and the marriage was registered Q3 1860 in Exeter, Devon. She was shown in the 1861 Census, for Weston super Mare, with John and two, unnamed 5-month old boys. It appears that she died around the 1st Quarter of 1869, age 42, in Axbridge, Somerset. (An irregularity in age shows up in this census, as John is 33, putting his birth year as 1828, instead of 1838. Yet it seems likely that it is the same person, as the occupations are related, and not so common as to confuse them with anything else. In 1861 he was a Brewer's Porter; in 1871, a Licenced Victualler, and in 1881, an Inn keeper.)

Eliza's birth was registered Q1 1840, in Bridgwater, Somerset and her death Q4 1932, in Axbridge, Somerset. The marriage record for John and Eliza says that John was a widower, the son of Samuel Parffrey, and the marriage took place 5 Jun 1869 at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol.

He died in 1926, the death being registered Q4 in Axbridge. The 'B' in his name was not in the birth or death registration, nor in the census reports in 1901 and 1911, but only in his marriage registration record. William was a Compositor in the printing trade.
William married KATE LANG with the marriage being registered Q1 of 1896, also in Axbridge. It appears that Kate was not named Catherine with a familiar name of Kate, but that it was actually her given name, probably the one in the Q4 1874 birth registration in Axbridge. Kate's death registration was Q2 1955 in Plympton, Devon.

6. -- ALBERT EDWARD PARFFREY (John--3; Samuel--2; ?William--1) was born 25 Aug 1877 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England, but the birth was registered in Axbridge. He died in bed 28 Dec 1938 in Whitmore Lake, Michigan, USA, and was buried at New Lakeview Cemetery there. Passenger lists name Albert as traveling from Liverpool to New York on 31 Dec 1910, aboard SS Caronia, his destination Chicago. His occupation was 'Confectioner' and for kin; 'wife' was written, but his mother's name - Eliza - was given. In his destination place, his brother Arthur was named. In 1917, when Albert was living in Chicago, Illinois, he signed up to join Canada Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg. His trade at the time was Cook. In 1918, he had a WWI Draft Registration Card in USA, noting that his 'citizenry' was England. His occupation was listed as Janitor at University of Chicago. In both records, his wife was Ada Parffrey.
Albert married, first, ADA JOSEPHINE RISDEN while still in England. The marriage was registered Q1 1907 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. Ada was the daughter of GEORGE RISDEN and ELIZA BROOKS, and her birth was registered Q4 1884 in Axbridge, Somerset. According to "Thirtle-Hetherington Family Tree" at Ancestry, Ada died in Savannah, Georgia, USA sometime after 1958. She was remarried, to WILLIAM STANLEY TOMLINS, and was shown with him in the 1930 US Census for Chicago.
The son of Albert and Ada was living with Ada in 1930 at census time, and married in Chicago in 1933, but died the next year, leaving his new wife a widow. She remained as such until her death in 1961.

Albert married, second, NELLIE MAE HUBBELL, the license taken out 2 Oct 1924. Both Albert and Nellie were living at the time in Rushton, Michigan, where Albert was working as a Chef. Nellie was the daughter of EDWARD BURDICK, and had been previously married to a Mr. Hubbell. She was born abt 1879 and died in 1933. She was buried at New Lakeview Cemetery, Whitmore Lake, Livingston, Michigan.
7. -- ARTHUR PARFFREY (John--3; Samuel--2; ?William--1) was born 24 Nov 1878 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. Arthur died in Chicago, Illinois on 4 Dec 1937. On his death record, Arthur's parents were named as Arthur and Emily, of Yorkshire, England, and Arthur himself was said to be from Yorkshire. The person giving the information didn't know his parents or where he was born. Arthur traveled to USA first in 1905, age 26, the passenger list saying that he was to visit his 'sister Mrs. G. Reynolds'. Records show another inbound US trip in 1910, after he had resided 5 years in USA. According to most records, Arthur was a Janitor, although, while still in Somerset, England with his parents, he had been a hairdresser, age 22.
Arthur married, first, INGA JOHNSON on 8 Mar 1912, in Chicago, Illinois. Inga was born in Sweden, 24 Feb 1873 and died in Chicago 10 Dec 1927.

Another marriage between ARTHUR PARFFREY and EDNA McGRATH was registered in Lake County, Indiana, USA, on 8 Aug 1932. However, the online information did not include an age, so it is uncertain if this was the marriage of Arthur, Senior, whose wife had died in 1927, or if it was the marriage of Arthur, Junior, who would have been twenty years old that year.

a--WILLIAM PARFREY was born abt 1809 in Gloucestershire, England. We can find no record so far of his parentage. The only similar name found for the year was a William Charles Parfrey, who was the son of Richard and Harriet Frances Parfrey, and the birth (25 Feb 1809) and baptism (3 Apr 1809) took place in Stogumber, Somerset. We find Census reports for William from 1841 through 1861, then a death Registration which may be his, in the first quarter of 1871 (The Census took place on 2 Apr 1871.)
William married ELIZABETH COLLIN or COLLINS 1 Feb 1830 at St John the Baptist church in Bristol, Gloucestershire. In the 1851 Census, Elizabeth was said to have been born in Bridgwater, Somerset. In the next Census, her husband was a Widower, so it is possible her burial was on 14 Sep 1856, in Bristol St Paul, Portland Square, Gloucestershire. No positive connection has been made, but Elizabeth could have been daughter of Hopewell Collins and Elizabeth Peacy, aged 60 and 71, respectively, in the 1841 Census for Twining, Gloucestershire. Banns of their marriage were published 3, 10 & 17 Dec of 1809, at Tewkesbury St Mary. Hopewell was possibly the son of James Collins and Esther Chandler. This might explain the source of the oft-used Collin or Collins middle name.

William married MARTHA HUMPHRIES on 2 Nov 1856, at St Paul church in Portland Square, Bristol, England. Martha was probably the dau of Thomas Humphries and was born abt 1834. The probate records for William and Martha show they died just two days apart - he, the 11th of January 1917 and she, the 13th, in Eastville, Bristol, Gloucestershire. The 1911 Census said that Martha was mother of 8 children, 6 of whom were living at the time.

c--ABEL MULLER PARFREY (William--a) was born 1834 and baptized 22 May of that year in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. The old IGI says he was baptized at the Gideon and Bethesda Chapel, a so-called Non-Conformist church on Newfoundland Street in Bristol. We have found a Non-Conformist birth registration, signed by George Müller, from whom Abel may have acquired his middle name. His death was registered Q3 1907 in Poplar, London, England. Censuses show that Abel was a Cook or Laborer at various times, but was living on his own means in 1901.
Abel married MARY DREDGE in Lambeth, Surrey and the marriage was registered Q4 1859. London marriage records say the marriage took place 6 Nov 1859, after Banns published the 16th, 23rd and 30th of October in that year. Mary's father was named James Dredge, the marriage record giving "Clothier" as his occupation.

William married ELIZA MARY COLLINS, the marriage being registered Q3 of 1883 in Barton Regis, Gloucestershire. Eliza's birth registration may be the one for Q1 1862 in Clifton, Gloucestershire. She may have been a daughter of William Collins, a Tailor from Marlborough WIL, and his wife Alice.

g--HENRY PARFREY (William C--b; William--a) was born 7 Jun 1871 in Bristol, Gloucestershire and died 21 Feb 1965, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. WWI Canada Registration records give his birth as 8 Jun 1874. The markers at Prospect Cemetery in Ontario include Henry's children, and his wife "Florence Rose Bird Parfrey Oct 10 1872 -- Oct 29 1953 wife of Henry Parfrey June 7 1871 -- Feb 21 1965, Bristol England." The 1911 Canada Census for "Harry and Florence Rose" says they emigrated in 1905 and were Methodist, and Passenger Lists show Henry, Rose, Clifford, Gertie and Austin came as a family. An inconsistency occurs in records for Clifford, their son, showing that his arrival was in 1896.
Henry married FLORENCE ROSE BIRD on 5 Jun 1892, at Holy Trinity church in Bristol, Gloucestershire. Florence was born 10 Oct 1872 and died in Toronto 29 Oct 1953. "Select" Church of England registers @ Ancestry.com say her father's name was William Bird.

Another Parfrey line from Somerset
A -- SAVILLE JOSEPH PARFREY was born about 1847 to 1850 in High Littleton, Somerset, England (according to Censuses). We have been unable to define his ancestry. Online, an Ancestry tree gives his parents as Thomas Parfrey and Harriet Sage, who are shown in our site as Generation 2/6. True, Thomas and Harriet did have a child named Joseph (Generation 3/20), but the records show he married Elizabeth Holbrook, and the census reports show him to be living in Gloucestershire during the years that Saville Joseph was living in Wales and Worcestershire. For a while we thought he may have been the Joseph baptized in High Littleton to Richard and Delarata Parfrey (Generation 2/3), and there is still a slight hope here. However, there are also some issues, as Joseph, son of Dularata Parphary, was shown in the 1870 Census in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The interesting thing is that prior to a marriage of Joseph Parfrey to Sarah White in 1879, there seemed to be no such person as Saville Joseph Parfrey. It was only in the 1891 Census in Llanelly, Wales, that the name first appeared, and he was married to a Sarah. His occupation was Publican (at the White Hart Public House) and Musician. It appears that he was named SAMUEL JOSEPH PARFREY in the Kelly's Directory of Birmingham, for the years 1899, 1900 and 1913. His occupation went from butcher and beer retailer to Publican and Musician (1891 census, as Saville), to Professor of Music in 1901, to Teacher & Tuner of Piano in 1911 and finally as Teacher of Music in Kelly's directory for 1913. It is possible that Joseph, the son of Richard & Delarata, is the same as Saville Joseph; he may have assumed the name Saville, perhaps to embellish his musical abilities (after being a coal miner in Pennsylvania). He could have returned to England on his own, married, and moved to Wales with his wife. A son by his second wife, with the middle name of Richard also lends support to our speculation.
Saville Joseph married first, SARAH, sometime before 1891. The only marriage we find that fits this pairing is that of Joseph to Sarah WHITE in Q3 1879, King's Norton, Worcestershire. We are unsure about Sarah's background. The 1891 Census gave her age as 34, making her birth about 1857, in Fenny Compton, Warwickshire. It is possible that she is the Sarah whose death was registered Q1 1894 in Llanelly, Wales. We know of no children born to them.
Saville Joseph married second, ALICE ELEANOR WHITE on 23 Jul 1896 at St Michael's church, Bishops Itchington, Warwickshire. There is no doubt about this marriage as it is shown under his name Saville Joseph. Maddeningly, on the marriage form, his father's name is simply shown as "deceased." Alice was the daughter of THOMAS ADKINS WHITE, a Butcher and Publican, and MATILDA EATON, who were married 6 Sep 1865, at St Matthew, Aston, Warwickshire. Alice was baptized in Bishops Itchington, 3 Jun 1877. She had four sisters -- Mary Matilda Eaton White (bp. 1867), Emma Elizabeth (bp. 1869), Sarah Ann (bp. 1874), and Gertude (bp. 1880). She also had one brother, Thomas George, baptized 1871. We wanted to relate Alice to Joseph's first wife, Sarah, but their ages would be nearly twenty years apart Perhaps Sarah was a relation to Thomas, Alice's father). Mary, Sarah Ann and Alice seem to have been raised by their grandparents, George & Mary Eaton (1881 and 1891 Censuses, Bishops Itchington)

Parfrey Families in Dorset--Generation 2
2 -- JANE PARFREY died before 1841, very likely in Dorset, England. Ancestry.com indexes her marriage name as "Palfry," while the marriage form itself is filled out with the name "Parfry" and signed "Parffery." We do not know where or when she was born, nor who her parents were.
Jane married ABRAHAM TROWBRIDGE on 2 May 1799, in Okeford-Fitzpaine, Dorset, England. Abraham, according to the 1841 and 1851 Censuses, was born about 1770, in Okeford-Fitzpaine. His death was registered Q4 1858 in Sturminster, Dorset. His parentage is unknown, although there is a suggestion he may be son of Ishmael Trowbridge. We find no record of his birth or baptism in Okeford-Fitzpaine, but it may be because extensive damage to parish records took place during WWII. We do find at least two Ishmael Trowbridges, but no way of connecting either of them to Abraham. A great deal of genealogical documentation has been done for the Trowbridge family in America, and they are said to come out of Taunton area of Somerset, England, which borders Dorset, and in Wiltshire, also a border county, there is a city called Trowbridge.
