The Powley Family of Norfolk, England
Descendants of William Powley
Norfolk, England, Early-Mid 1500s
Norfolk, England, Early-Mid 1500s
This line has come down through other researchers, who worked with a Family History Centre in Norfolk. The names are probably 'mostly' correct as shown, but keep in mind that each generation in the line used the same set of names for their children, often leading to confusion as to which William or which John or which Dorothy was really on record. Also, the records are far from complete, as the concentration was on one particular line of descendants, many other branches left out entirely. At the end of this family's lineage is a listing of miscellaneous, unaccounted for baptisms, marriages and burials for Norfolk, in particular, for Little Fransham, Necton and Sporle with Palgrave, where the first Powley records were made.
Early records found for Fransham name Geoffrey Powly, who held property of the 'Manor of Kyrkyn' in the 21st year of the Reign of Henry VI. This may be the ancient Manor of Kirkham of Medieval times [see "Fransham, The Heart of Norfolk"]. He later surrendered that property to Thomas Powly and his heirs. Geoffrey married Alice, daughter and heir of John Kooe(?).
In 1422, an Alexander Powley held land in Fransham, from a Thomas Powly. Also, a Walter Powly held land in Fransham during the 15th year of the Reign of Henry VI. The manorial records include several Powley entries.

1-- WILLIAM POWLEY was born before 1537/8, when England authorized churches to keep records of all baptisms, marriages and burials. He resided in Little Fransham, Norfolk, and he was buried there at St Mary church on 24 Oct 1577. According to the land records, he purchased property in Little Fransham from a Roger Knott in 1544, and he also had property in Necton. In 1543, he was said to be an Aletaster, and in his will he was described as a ropemaker. As ale taster, he was appointed to ensure that beer was 'good, wholesome, and fair-priced." It is possible that William and two other Powley men served as Justices of the Peace in the village.
William mar. ALICE (---), possibly around 1534-5. Their first child was not shown in the baptism records which began in 1538, leaving us to conclude that he was born before that year, so it's likely that William and Alice were married before that. Alice outlived William, and her burial was recorded in the registers of St Mary in Little Fransham 27 Mar 1582. Her parentage is unknown.

John had his father's property in Necton and served as Executor to his father's will in 1582. He also had properties in Fransham, through his wife's family, and through the Wyskards.
John mar. AGNES DARBIE or DERBY, 7 Nov 1568 at All Saints church in Necton. Agnes was bur. in 1604 at the church in Necton. The register gives their names as John Powlie & Agnes Darbie, but property to John is through 'Derby.'

William mar. ELLEN, presumably in about 1574-75. (Register records are written in Latin by a less-than-perfect hand, and very difficult to decipher. One can look in the Norfolk image folder at FamilySearch, under Little Fransham > Baptisms, Marriage, Burials > 1538-1730, about pg 50)

6-- JOHN POWLEY (Thomas/Ellen--2; William/Alice--1) was bapt. 10 Jun 1582 at St Mary church in Little Fransham. He was bur. 14 Jan 1625 at the same church.
John possibly mar. first, ANNE BARNEM, or BARNHAM, a single woman, on 1 Jun 1606, in All Saints church in Necton. Anne was bur. 17 Nov of the same year, in Necton.
John , described as widower, mar. second, BRIDGET CLAXTON, on 15 Nov 1609, at All Saints church in Necton. Bridget outlived John and was mentioned in his will. Her name in one reference is spelled PAXTON. (Note that the first child listed, noted in the register only as 'sonne of John Powlie' was born a few months before this marriage, so it is possible he is the child of another John -- or not. Also, there are inconsistencies over which one can only speculate.)

7-- WILLIAM POWLEY (Ralph/Lucy--3; William/Alice--1) was bapt. 25 Apr 1574 at St Mary church in Little Fransham. There are several William Powleys in the burial registers of Little Fransham, so it is impossible at this time to discern which died when.
William mar. ISABEL WATLINGE 22 Oct 1598, at St Mary church in Little Fransham.

9-- THOMAS POWLEY (John/Agnes--4; William/Alice--1) was baptized 12 Mar 1587, at All Saints church in Necton, Norfolk. He was probably bur. around 1647, in Necton. (Note that there is a Thomas Powly, widower, bur. 12 Jan 1621, and an Elizabeth Powly bur. 23 Oct 1619, but this may be Thomas, the son of Thomas--2, above) Thomas had property in Little Fransham, which he received through his father in 1603/4.
Thomas mar. ELIZABETH (--), and they had at least two children:

He was known as "Rev." Christopher Powley and was Godson to Alice, who died in 1581/2. He was educated at Cambridge Trinity College, and was Curate of Westacre in 1598, Vicar of Sedgeford in 1600 and finally Rector of Great Massingham from 1619-1653. Christopher purchased property in Lingthwaite, Necton, from his brother William in around 1612 which he later released to John Sherwood. He was married at least two times, and may have mar. a third time, but the supposed third may be marriage of his son, Christopher.

John married (1) BEATRICE (--), who was bur. 14 Feb 1653, at St Mary church in Little Fransham. Some sources say they were married about 1642, but in the record images, there is a baptism record for a child in 1640, "ye sonne of Joh_n Powly and Betterice his wife."

William married JANE LINSON, 28 Sep 1640 at St Mary church in Little Fransham. "Willyam Powly and Jane Linfon nupti fuerant vicissimo octavo die septembris 1640" (as best we can decipher). FreeREG transcriptions pick up the bride's name as Hinson.

16-- THOMAS POWLEY (Thomas/Elizabeth--9; John/Agnes--4; William/Alice--1) was shown as the son and heir of Thomas Powley (who d. 1647), in the chart made by the historial society in Norfolk. However, suggestion is also made that he may have predeceased his father. Note that there is are burial records for Thomas Powlie, 26 Jan 1658-9, at All Saints church in Necton, and for 24 Jan 1658-9 at St Mary, Little Fransham. The many similar names make this a hard line to follow.
Thomas married SUSAN (--), who may have been buried 6 Apr 1630 at All Saints church in Necton. It is also possible that this is a daughter of Thomas and Susan, who bore her mother's name. Note that there is another pair, named Thomas and Susan Powley who baptized children in 1594, 1601-2, 1610, 1611, and 1612-13, all in Necton.

17-- ROBERT POWLEY (Christopher--10; William/Ellen--5; William/Alice--1) was baptized 25 Mar 1599, at St George church in South Acre, Norfolk, England. The baptismal names were "Robertus, of Christoferi & Maria Powley" but this Robert is possibly the same as Robert POOLEY, who became a clergyman, having been educated at Caius College (Cambridge). Records of Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900 give the following account: Robert Pooly / College: Caius / Entered: 1617 / Died: 1665 -- Adm. sizar (age 17) at CAIUS, Apr. 6, 1616, S. of Christopher (1592), V. of Sedgeford, Norfolk. Matric. 1617; B.A. 1619-20; M.A. 1623. Ord. priest (Norwich) 1622. C. of Aspall, Norfolk, in 1636; of Garboldisham, 1641. R. of Beetley, 1645-65. V. of Stow Bedon, until 1663. Died 1665. Brother of Christopher (1628).
Robert married ELIZABETH (--), but nothing more is known about her.
