Descendants of Thomas Gainsbury
Norfolk, England, Mid-1700s
- - - Generation 1 - - -
1-- THOMAS GAINSBURY was born abt 1725 and was buried 11 Jun 1785 at St Andrew church in Holme Hale, Norfolk, at age 60. (Another Gainsbury researcher has suggested that the grave marker actually says he was 65 at his burial, although the photo we have of the marker seems to be unreadable at that point in the text.) Gainsbury is also found in a few records as Gainsborough, Gainsby, Gamsby, Gainsburn, and even Garysbury. Because of the closeness of Thomas Gainsbury's name with the famous artist, Thomas Gainsborough, we have looked up a bio and although their life spans are nearly the same, they are not related. Our Thomas is from Norfolk, while the artist was from Suffolk. An interesting note, however, is that both Thomases have a connection to the surname "Burroughs."
Thomas married ELIZABETH TUCKE* on 1 Oct 1749 at St Andrew church. Elizabeth was probably born abt 1721, and she was buried on 3 Jun 1792, at St Andrew church.

* Most information for THOMAS GAINSBURY and ELIZABETH TUCKE is taken from Parish Register images found at FamilySearch. The first image we found was very light and only partially readable, but another image, possibly a later copy, seems clear enough. Thomas' name was spelled "Ganesbury," and Elizabeth's surname is under debate, guessing Sucke, Tuck, and even a well-known unspeakable word. In the register pages for Holme Hale, where this record is found, there are entries for the name "Took," so it is quite possible that the spelling and handwriting variations by clerks has resulted in this confusion.

Jesse was bur. at St Andrew church in Holme Hale on 14 Jun 1897. He was never married, but lived his entire life in Holme Hale, as a Carpenter. He is included here in this generational section because of the claims that he might be the real father of the three girls marked above as children of John Gainsbury. The baptismal records we have found say they were daughters of John, but one researcher has said flatly that they are Jesse's children. If that is indeed so, then the mother is unknown.

His death was registered Q2 1927 in West Ham, ESX. It seems that Charles was for a time a teacher in Public School, but the 1911 Census shows him as a Tramway Inspector.
Charles mar. LOUISA RUMBLE on 30 Jul 1887 at St John church in Hackney. Louisa was b. 9 Oct and bapt. 29 Oct 1865, at Holy Trinity church in Mile End Old Town (also called Trinity Stepney). She probably was one of twelve children of CHARLES RUMBLE, a Fishmonger, and SARAH ANN CLEMENTS.

Arthur mar. LOUISA DILLON, and the marriage was registered Q2 1898 in Shoreditch. The later censuses indicate Louisa was born abt 1872/3 in Hackney or Bethnal Green.

She was baptized 31 May 1890 in St Mary Haggerston church in Hackney, London. It is possible Louisa may have remarried, late in 1911, to either Frederick Rogers or Thomas Yerrell.
Louisa mar. SIDNEY CHARLES EYKELBOSCH and the marriage was registered Q1 1898 in Shoreditch, London. Sidney's birth was registered Q1 1874 in Hackney, and he died before 1911, when Louise was listed in the Census as a widow. If Sidney is the same as the one admitted to school on 28 Nov 1883, he was born on 11 Jan 1874, and his father was C. Thomas, which may be Cassius Thomas Eykelbosch. Also admitted was Alfred Eykelbosch, who was born in 1873 to the same father. Cassius may have married at some point, Louisa's sister Clara, but we haven't dug into that as yet.

25-- GRACE V. GAINSBURY (Walter-Youngs--13; John--7; John--4; Daniel--2; Thomas--1) was born abt 1888 in Swaffham, Norfolk. Records are inconclusive about her life. A birth is recorded under the name Grace Valeria Gainsbury in the Sep. Quarter of 1887 in Swaffham, but a marriage to Oliver Stibbon is recorded under the name Grace O. Gainsbury. The England & Wales marriage index gives the name Grace C. Gainsbury. A death registration for June 1965 names Grace V Stibbon, and is matched by the following probate:
1965. STIBBON Grace Valeria of 65 London Street Swaffham Norfolk died 4 May 1965 at The Vale Hospital Swainsthorpe Norfolk Probate Norwich 4 August to Reginald Walter Oliver Stibbon civil servant. £2124
It appears that Grace Gainsbury mar. OLIVER STIBBON and the marriage was registered Q1 of 1921 in Swaffham, Norfolk. There are at least three Oliver Stibbons born in Norfolk at nearly the same year, so we cannot say for sure what his vitals are. His probate, however, clearly names Grace:
STIBBON Oliver of 65 London-street Swaffham Norfolk died 4 March 1953 at Victoria Cottage Hospital Swaffham Probate Norwich 16 July to Grace Valeria Stibbon widow. Effects £685.
Children of Oliver & Grace:

26-- ALFRED WILLIAM GAINSBURY (Aldis--14; John--7; John--4; Daniel--2; Thomas--1) was baptized 9 Apr 1852 at St Andrew church in Holme Hale, NFK and his death may have been registered Q4 1942, in Kensington, London (his age was given as 73, which would make his birth year 1869, so it is not certain). Alfred was a Cabinet Maker.
On 8 Nov 1892, Alfred mar. MAGGIE HOUSEMAN, at St Simon Zelotes church in Chelsea, MDX. Maggie was born 28 Apr 1872 in the Covent Garden area of London, and was daughter of EDWIN HOUSEMAN (1843-1880) and MARGARET BEGG, who was from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Francis, or Frank, served with the Royal Navy in Australia and South Africa, where he was shown in the 1911 Census.
Frank mar. ADA GARLAND ROGERS and the marriage was registered Q1 1904 in Chelsea, London. Ada was the daughter of WILLIAM ROGERS and ADA GARLAND, and the name Garland was passed down to several children and grandchildren. Ada's death was registered Q1 of 1952 in Fulham.

Noble, the son of WILLIAM GROOMBRIDGE, Blacksmith, and his wife Margaret, was born 25 Jun and bapt. 2 Jul 1886, at St Mary church in Battersea. His death was registered Q1 1956 in Fulham, London. Although the marriage was in 1906, the first child known to be of theirs in the BMD Index is from 1913, because mothers' maiden names were not shown until 1912.

He may have died in 1921, although the age on record does not quite agree with his birth record. The death was registered Q1 of 1921 in Fulham, London.
