Miller Family from Alsace, France (German)
to Lincoln, Nebraska
A family lineage document for the Miller family found with a grandmother's papers, describes our connections to Alsace, Illinois and Nebraska. The document began with Michael Miller (1810-1886) and Catherine Walters (1810-1892), both of whom came from towns in Alsace. The towns were called 'Claybourne' and 'Ellensbach.' A search of the internet led us to Ancestry's old "OneWorldTree" which included our Michael and Catherine, plus parents and grandparents of Michael, although no reference source is cited.
1 -- JAQUIS MULLER was born in Alsace, and married CATARIN HAUSSAUER in Alsace (Haussauer and its variations are found frequently in the context of Cleebourg, Alsace).

ii. ---- 4-- JACOB MILLER (1815-1871); m. MAGDALENA WALTER
The documents did not name Jacob, except for a note: "may have had a brother Rev. Jake Miller". We have added him to Michael's children because of compelling coincidences, as explained under each name.

Generation 3
======================================================================================
3 -- JOHANN MICHAEL MILLER (Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 18 Apr 1810 in Cleebourg, Alsace, Bas Rhin. He died 4 Feb 1886 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska and was buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. The stone marker is 4-sided, with a different name on each side. According to his obituary, he came to America in 1832, landing in New York, where he lived for three years before moving to Illinois. Michael and his wife, along with several other couples, founded the German Methodist-Episcopal Church in Bushnell, Illinois, where he also served as its first Sunday School superintendant. In about 1881, he and his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he and Catherine lived with their daughter, Julia.
Michael married CATHERINE WALTER ("Katrina") 8 July 1834 in New York. Catherine was born 9 Apr 1810 in Allensbach, Alsace, Bas Rhin and died 25 Jul 1892 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. She is also buried at Wyuka Cemetery. An obituary for Catherine gives her vitals and acknowledges her participation in the founding of the German M. E. Church in Bushnell, Illinois. The article says "in the company of friends and relatives emigrated to America landing in New York City in the spring of 1832." This was also the year her husband and Jacob Miller came to New York, so they may all have been passengers on the same journey, suggesting that a possible sister of hers, Magdalena, may have been the one to marry Jacob, thought to be Michael's brother.

4 -- JACOB MILLER (Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born in Cleebourg, Alsace, Bas Rhin 13 Jan 1815 (Source: OneWorldTree; History German ME church at Bushnell) He was a minister of the German Methodist Episcopal church and lived mostly in Illinois. We think he can be followed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Censuses. A short biography stated that he came to New York from Alsace in his 17th year (1832) the same year Johann Michael (3) journeyed to America.
Jacob married MAGDALENA WALTER in 1835, probably in New York. According to OneWorldTree, Magdalena or Magdaline was born 25 Dec 1806. We do not know if this information is proven, as there are several women with the same name in the immigration records. But we do know that in subsequent censuses, she is always shown as older than Jacob.

Generation 4
======================================================================================
5 -- JULIANA CATHERINE MILLER (Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) or "Julia," was born 11 Nov 1840 in Illinois, USA and died 19 Aug 1903 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Julia was buried near her parents at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, under her maiden name. All but her eldest child took her maiden name as adults.
Juliana married HENRY C. JOHNSON 19 Mar 1858, in McDonough County, Illinois. Henry was born about 1828, but it is not known if he was born in Hungary or England, as Census returns show both. Henry and Julia were shown together in 1860, when their daughter Catherine was a year old. Katie is shown in her father's household in future censuses. In 1870, Henry had a new wife, Sophia (Biermann), who had three children of her own. They were married in 1868 and had a child together, Lewis Henry, who was a year old in 1870.
Children of Henry & Julia:

iv. --- 10-- WILLIAM C. MILLER (1863-1953); m. JULIANA LAUTERBACH
6 -- JOHN WILLIAM MILLER (Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 15 Dec 1842 in Illinois and died 23 Dec 1912, in Cañon City, Fremont, Colorado. He is buried at Lakeside Cemetery there, where his marker says "A Union Army Civil War veteran, with Co. G., 1 Ohio Light Artillery."
John married, first, LENORA MILBOURN on 19 Dec 1867, in Adams County, Illinois. "Nora" was born about 1851 in Ohio, and died sometime after 1876. She and John and their first two children were found in the 1870 Census, but John was remarried by the time of the 1880 Census.
Children of John and Nora:
i. ---- 11-- WALTER MICHAEL MILLER (1868-1962); m. SARAH MARGARET BARTON
ii. -------- CLARENCE MILLER b. abt 1870, IL; d. ??
iii. -- 12-- WILLIAM HENRY MILLER (1872-1972); m.1 MAUD PRATHER; m. 2 RENA LENORA SMITH
iv. --- 13-- MYRTLE MILLER (1876-__); m. CHARLES R. TRAVIS
John married, second, CAROLINE HENRY (born Caroline Haas). Caroline was called "Carrie" in the family tree document, but her current descendants by her first marriage found this name peculiar. She was born in May of 1842 in Pennsylvania, according to the Census. Her first husband was RUDOLF HEINRICH, whose name was changed to RUDOLF HENRY. He died of Consumption in the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War. They had two children, who were living with John and Carrie in the 1880 Census, for Henry County, Missouri, and in the 1885 Nebraska State Census, for Elk, Lancaster County.

7 -- CHARLES C. MILLER (Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 6 May 1846 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois and died 17 May 1887 in Woodbury, Washington, Minnesota. The Find a Grave website calls him "Reverend" and he was evidently minister of the Woodbury Methodist Episcopal Church. He kept a diary which might shed light on his life, but it was written in German and the Minnesota Historical Society said that at the time of the short biography in their documents, it had not been translated. Charles apparently died of injuries after being kicked by a horse.
Charles Married ELIZABETH WENZEL Nov of 1869 in Stephenson County, Illinois. Records disagree on the marriage date, being either the 17th or the 21st of November. Elizabeth was born 26 Jan 1850 in Perry, Pike, Illinois, and died 11 May 1936 in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. Records of researcher J.Boardman say her parents were Christian Gottfried Wensel and Maria Elizabeth Diry, both born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.

8 -- FREDERICK E. MILLER (Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 15 Apr 1852 in Illinois and died 3 Jul 1939 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Frederick was shown in the family document for the Miller family, but there is some controversy over which Frederick it was. Some references say his middle name was Emanuel, but his gravestone only gives him the initial 'E.'
Frederick married, first, EVA M. KOST on 20 Nov 1877 in Adams County, Illinois. Eva was born 9 Nov 1854 in Quincy, Adams, Illinois and died 29 Sep 1907. She and Fred were buried at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Ancestry's old OneWorldTree gives her parents names as Henry (b. 1827) and Kate (b. 1828). An 1880 US Census report for Quincy, Illinois shows a Henry and Catherine Kost, he born in Prussia, she in Germany. This may be Eva's family, but the date is after her marriage, so she is not shown to prove it. In the next available census, for 1900, Catherine is widowed.

9 -- ELLASTINE MILLER "Ella" (Henry C. Johnson & Julia Miller--5; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 11 Aug 1860 in Illinois and died 13 Dec 1934 in Nebraska. She was buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. In the 1920 Census, she was Manager of a Cafeteria.
Ella married JOHN W. MINDERFER 24 Aug 1879 in McDonough County, Illinois. John was born 13 May 1858 in Illinois and died 23 Nov 1926. He was also buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. We're not sure of John's parentage, as his name seems to be an Anglicized form of Mintefering, or Mientarfer.
Children of John and Ella:

Will married JULIANA LAUTERBACH on 31 Aug 1885 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Julia was a daughter of ADAM LAUTERBACH and MARY FREDERICKA PFEIFFER. Adam was born in Germany in 1838, and Mary was born at sea under the German Flag, in 1840.

11 -- WALTER MICHAEL MILLER (John Wm--6; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 10 Oct 1868 in Bushnell, McDonough, Illinois and died 4 Dec 1962 in Denton, Lancaster, Nebraska. According to a family member, after Walter died, his Nebraska farm was sold, the house moved out, and the property became part of a recreational lake which "floods the most of good farm land."
Walter married SARAH MARGARET BARTON, or "Maggie" on 25 Oct 1894 in Bedford, Taylor, Iowa, which was Maggie's birthplace, 9 Sep 1872. She died 6 Jun 1950 in Denton, Lancaster, Nebraska. Maggie was the daughter of NOAH E. BARTON (1835-1913) and MARY JANE LAIRD (1852-1924). Noah was the son of William Barton, born 1798 in Ireland.
Children of Walter and Maggie:

12 -- WILLIAM HENRY MILLER (John Wm--6; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 1 Nov 1872 in Clinton, Henry, Missouri and died just two weeks short of 100 years, 15 Oct 1972, at Sky Forest in the hills of San Bernardino County, California. Known by his descendent family as "Granny," William was a machinist by trade, and at one time partnered with his father-in-law to run a machine shop in Lincoln, Nebraska.
William married first, MAUD PRATHER, who was but fifteen at the time. She may have been the daughter of JOHN W. PRATHER and his wife LUCY, and if so, lived in Gravity, Taylor County, Iowa in 1885. Her birth was probably 16 Apr 1880 and she died 22 Apr 1900, just twenty years old.
Children of William and Maud:
i. --------- COSEY MAY MILLER (1895-1981); m. GUY ALLEN MICKLE (2 children)
ii. -------- ROY EDWARD MILLER (1897-1964); m. BESSIE BLANCHE BOVEE (2 children)
William married second, RENA LENORA SMITH on 26 Sep 1900, in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa, this according to Iowa County Marriages at FamilySearch. However, a newspaper clipping of December 1900 reads: "The friends of Mr. W. H. Miller and Miss Rena L. Smith will be surprised to learn of their marriage at Omaha September 26. The wedding occurred at the home of Mrs. C. C. Allen, sister of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Miller will be at home to their friends after March 1, at 432 South Ninth street." Rena, known to her family as "Nammo" was born 15 Nov 1876 in Palmyra, Otoe, Nebraska, the daughter of ROBERT LANSING SMITH and SARAH ELIZA JARY.
Child of William and Rena:
Child of William and Rena:

13 -- MYRTLE MILLER (John Wm--6; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born about 1876 in Illinois or Missouri. Myrtle's history is uncertain. She may have been the Myrtle Miller who, in the 1880 Census for Bushnell, Illinois, was the 4-yr-old adopted daughter of Johann Michael and Katrina Miller, but she was not in Michael's household in the 1885 Nebraska State Census. However, there is a Myrtle Miller, age 9, found in that State Census, shown as daughter of J W and Carolina Miller. She showed up in 1900 as well, also in John's household, age 24 and an indication that she was born in May 1876.
Myrtle's marriage is also unclear. An online tree at Ancestry says she married in Montana a man surnamed CONNOR, while our family documents say she married CHARLES R. TRAVIS, 25 Feb 1901 (date from FamilySearch, but not official record). Charles was born about 1872 in Illinois and was probably the son of J.V. TRAVIS and LAURA BECKELHEIMER. In the 1910 Census for Buffalo, Nebraska he was listed as Vocal Music Teacher, and as some kind of Theatrical? Manager in 1920 (De Kalb Co, Georgia)
Children of Charles and Myrtle:

14 -- ARTHUR WENZEL MILLER (Charles--7; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 18 Aug 1870 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois, and died 20 Apr 1942 in Stillwater, Washington County, Minnesota. He was a Physician and Surgeon. Arthur and his wife were buried at Woodbury Cemetery in Washington County, Minnesota.
Arthur married ALICE BILLINGS MILLARD on 26 Jun 1902, in Kasson, Dodge, Minnesota. The 1910, and 1930 U.S. Censuses give her birthplace as Minnesota, and her parents' birthplace as Vermont. She died in 1936 and was buried at Woodbury Cemetery. Alice was born a Billings, daughter of Orlando and Sarah Billings, and there is an online record of a marriage to Elmer E. Millard in 1887. Unfortunately, it is an unofficial record (not a license or certificate) of an ambiguous transcript from one of many sources, including family trees.
Child of Arthur and Alice:
i. --------- ARTHUR B. MILLER b. 1904, MN; d. 10 Jan 1953, Ramsey Co., MN
15 -- IDA MAY MILLER (Charles--7; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 19 Dec 1874 in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois and died 17 May 1940 in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota.
Ida married EDWARD B. STRATE in about 1897. Edward was born about 1872 in Minnesota and in the 1910 U.S. Census, he was a Bank Teller, and was living with his wife and child, his mother-in-law and her son Evelyn, and his brother-in-law Walter, who was also employed at the bank.
Child of Edward and Ida Mae:
i. --------- GORDON E. STRATE, b. abt 1902, MN; d. __
16 -- WALTER KOPP MILLER (Charles--7; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 19 Jan 1886 in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota and died 27 Jun 1974 in Buffalo, Wright, Minnesota. In the 1930 U.S. Census for St Paul, he was working at a Bank as Assistant Cashier. In 1940 he sold insurance. Walter and his wife were both buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville, Ramsey, Minnesota.
Walter married MILDRED CONGDON BOARDMAN on 6 Oct 1916, in St Paul, Minnesota. She was born 22 Sep 1888 in La Crosse, Wisconsin and died 5 May 1965 in St Paul, Minnesota. Find a Grave online says her parents were ODESSA DEWITT BOARDMAN (1866-1944) and DORA ANN CONGDON (1864-1936), and lists three siblings.

17 -- HENRY HARMS or HARRIS MILLER (Frederick E--8; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born 3 Dec 1882 and died 11 May 1969, in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. His middle name showed clearly as "Harms" in the WWII Draft Registration Cards, but the one for WWI, while it appears to be spelled "Harms" nevertheless includes a mark, as if an apostrophe, which makes the name look like "Harris." Other records and his signature seem only to show an "H".
Henry married ELIZABETH ALICE SCHILLING on 15 Feb 1911, in Scribner, Dodge, Nebraska. According to Ancestry's old OneWorldTree, her birth was 25 Nov 1891, in Scribner, Nebraska, and she died 14 May 1986 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The same source gives her parents' names as CARL FREDERICK SCHILLING and AUGUSTA SCHALL, and lists twelve children, Elizabeth being the eleventh. (Stats for the children named below are from the same site)
Children of Henry and Elizabeth:
i. --------- ERVIN H[ARRISON] MILLER b. 31 Jan 1912, NE; d. 26 Mar 1986, NE; m. KATHRYN IRENE DUNN (1913-1986) (5 children)

18 -- FREDERICK WILLIAM MILLER was born 16 May 1892 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska and died 18 Oct 1973 in Loma Linda, San Bernardino, California. Some doubt occurs in his name and dates, as there are several Fredericks of the same time-frame with the same name, either with or without the middle name. Our original document said only "Fred" and said he was born about 1894. According to the OneWorldTree cited earlier, Fred's WWI Draft Registration Card shows he claimed excemption on the basis of 'religious scruples - Seventh Day Adventist.' Find a Grave website names him "Elder Frederick William Miller."
Frederick is said to have married SUSAN MINNESOTA NARY on 27 Apr 1920 in Loma Linda, California. ("Ancestral Whispers" for Denton, Nebraska names a Fred Miller and Pauline, and lists eight children; this Fred was born in Switzerland.)

19 -- HARVEY L. MILLER (Frederick E--8; Johann Michael--3; Michael--2; Jaquis--1) was born probably 23 Sep 1896 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. There is confusion on this name, because there were other Harvey Millers born about the same time, and in same general place. The one clue we have was that in the family document, from which we began our search, the notation had been made "was living in Port Orchard, Wash, 1976." Therefore, this Harvey must be the one who died 15 March 1985 in Port Orchard, Kitsap, Washington. The "L" must stand for "Lincoln" which name was included on his WWII Draft Registration Card in 1942. Before that, Harvey and his family lived in Moline, Rock Island, Illinois, and we find him in the 1920 and 1930 censuses there. He was in Kitsap County Washington by the time of the 1940 Census.
Harvey married ELSIE ANN ANDERSON in 1919, in Rock Island County, Illinois. Elsie was born 6 Nov 1896 in Illinois, and died 22 Aug 1978. She and Harvey are both buried at Sedgwick Cemetery in Kitsap County, Washington.

He was buried at Lincoln Memorial Park. Charles served in the military during WWI, assigned at one time to an ammunition train, and later stationed in Toulouse, France.
Charles married, first, MYRTLE LEMAY on 3 Jan 1920 (Charles' birthday), in Denton, Nebraska. Myrtle was the younger of two daughters born to CHARLES LEMAY and CHARLOTTE MAY ABBOTT (daughter of James Bradfield Abbott and Anne Gates, both born in Norfolk, England). Myrtle was born in November of 1897 in Nebraska, two months after her father's murder in South Dakota, where he had gone to work. We do not know why Myrtle was still shown as unmarried in the 1920 Census, and as living with her parents. The records of Denton Community Historical Society may have given a wrong marriage date, but clearly, this couple were married. Our family documents show one child born to Charles and Myrtle, but Ancesty's old OneWorldTree names three.
